While most people would prefer to enjoy breakfast in bed in the privacy of their homes, over 400 people turned out to eat the morning meal in front of each other.

The event in Hebei, north east China, was part of a Guinness World Record attempt for 'the most people eating breakfast in bed', reported People's Daily Online.

A total of 418 people were recorded in the successful record attempt, which was confirmed by Guinness World Record today.


The record attempt took place in the spacious garden of Sheraton Langfang Chaobai River Hotel in Langfang city, Hebei, on August 16

Participants were sat on one of the 113 beds in the hotel garden. They were not allowed to touch their breakfast until the attempt started

The participants had to eat breakfast simultaneously in the space of five minutes.

They were treated to a tray, which included continental breakfast items such as pastries and muffins as well as fruit and juices.

There were also several rules to follow in order for the record attempt to be successful (see fact box below).


Incredible images of the record attempt showed 113 beds lined up in neat rows in an outdoor area.

Everyone attempting the record was wearing orange T-shirts with Sheraton Hotel's branding.

Some even brought umbrellas to shelter themselves from the sun.

Two giant screens on either side of the 'arena' showed a live feed of the record attempt.

According to reports, 490 adults and children were part of the record attempt that took place on August 16.

It was held in the spacious garden of Sheraton Langfang Chaobai River Hotel in Langfang city, Hebei.

Of those, 418 were counted as valid by Guinness World Records, which confirmed the new record by email today.

According to Jamie Clarke, UK and International Press Officer for Guinness World Records, the record attempt was adjudicated by an official Guinness World Records adjudicator.

Mr Clarke told MailOnline: 'We have specific rules and guidelines for all record attempts.'

'It is likely that some were disqualified for not following the rules correctly.'

The record for the most people eating in bed was previously held by Shangri-La Hotel, Pudong, in east Shanghai, China.

Shangri-La Pudong had hosted the record attempt for breast cancer charity More than Aware.

388 people were part of the record attempt, which took place in 2014 on November 12.

Those present were treated to a continental breakfast as well as a cooked bowl of noodles.

RULES FOR MOST PEOPLE EATING BREAKFAST IN BED GUINNESS WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT

  1. To qualify, the event must take place at breakfast time (between the hours of six and eleven in the morning)
  2. All participants must be lying in a bed. More than one participant may share a bed, but there must be enough room for each participant to eat from a tray with both legs on the bed and their back on the headboard.
  3. All participants must be served breakfast on a tray. The breakfast can be of the cooked or continental variety, but must include at least two breakfast food items as well as a beverage.
  4. Participants must not eat their breakfasts until everyone is in place and the attempt begins.
  5. Starting at the sound of a loud start signal, participants must eat their breakfasts together while lying in bed.
  6. Participants must stay in position and eat their breakfasts for a minimum of 5 minutes.
