Festivals of Thrissur District , Kerala
The main festivals of Thrissur are Thrissur Pooram, Guruvayur temple festivals, Kodungallur bharani, Koodalmanickam utsavam etc.
Thrissur pooram:
The Thrissur Pooram festival in the Vadakkumnathan Temple is celebrated annually during the month of April-May. It is a festival in which Gods and Goddesses from various temples are brought in all pomp and pageantry with the play of drums and musical instruments to the Thekkinkadu Maidan. This festival is attended by Lakhs of people. An all India Exhibition is also conducted every year during the Pooram days under the combined auspices of the Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu Devaswoms at the temple premises.
Guruvayur temple festivals:
The important religious festivals, which are celebrated here, are the Ashtami Rohini celebrated during the Aug-Sept, The Sukla Paksha Ekadasi celebrated during the Nov-Dec, the Vishu Kani celebrated during the April-May, and the 10 days Utsavam celebrated during the Feb-March. Of these the Edakasi draws the largest crowd.
Kodungallur bharani: The famous Bharani utsavam is conducted in Meenam during March-April for eight days. Another important Festival is Kodungallur Thalapoli that falls on Dec-Jan every year. Thousands of people come from different zones of the country as well as the whole world to witness these two festivals.
Koodalmanickam utsavam:
The Koodalmanickam Temple is an ancient and historic one situated in Manavalassery Village. This is placed at about 10 km from Irinjalakuda Railway Station. Sri Bharatha is the deity of this temple. The festival is held annually for 11 days in Medom during April-May.
Arattupuzha pooram:
The Festival is held in April-May every year. It is one of the most colourful carnivals of Kerala drawing thousands of people from different parts of India. Idols from 41 temples in the neighbourhood villages are brought at night in procession to this village on rows of decorated elephants. It is possible that Arattupuzha was so called, because the deities, 'Arat" in the waters of the Arattupuzha river.
Machattu mamangam:
This place is situated near Wadakkanchery. This place is also called Machadu. Thiruvanikavu Temple is also known as Machattu Vela celebrated in February with great prestige and splendor on the last day of the five day annual festival at Thiruvanikavu Temple. Devotees bring richly decorated Poykuthiras or Horses in ceremonial processions as offering to the deity.
Feast fairs of Palayur church:
The Catholic Syrian Church of Palayur is one of the seven churches founded by St.Thomas. The feast falls on July 15 and many pilgrims from different parts of India visit the church.
Cheraman juma masjid:
The Cheraman Juma Masjid, constructed in A.D. 629, is famous as the first mosque set up in India and also the second in the world where the Juma Prayers were started. People from far and near irrespective of caste and creed visit this holy place and pay their homage. Id-ul-fitr, which is known as Ramzan, and Id-ul-Asha, which is known as bakrid, are celebrated here on a grand scale.
