Re: [World Malayali Club] Aasthma

"It is more confusing that some says citric should not be used and some says it is useful for Asthma patients, even though I am not turned in Asthma but am a allergic bronchitis and occasionally uses Asthaline inhaler during high humid climates."
There is no problem with citrus fruits. In fact it contains lot of Vit C and is good for immunity and epithelial tissues. BUT IF YOU GET COUGH OR ITCHING AFTER TAKING CITRUS FRUITS IT SHOWS THAT YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO IT THEN YOU HAVE TO AVOID IT. GENERALISED STATEMENT THAT CITRUS FRUITS TO BE AVOIDED IN PATIENTS WITH ALLERGY IS WRONG.
I used to get sneezing, watering of eyes running nose as soon as I get up in the morning till 11 to 12 in the morning. It was very troublesome for my work as I used to sneeze continuously for 2 to 4 minutes. But any anti histamines used to give me full relief. But the problem was that it produces drowsiness and you feel sleepy, and work used to get affected. My mother used to give me lime juice with honey every morning for months together. But no use. I got relief when I started going to football ground and run 5 to 6 rounds around the field and play with the boys ( I used to play foot ball till I completed my Medical course. I stopped it when I started working in a remote village in Wynad). Now I regularly play shuttle from 5.30 am to 7 am. So far I did not have symptoms. Now almost 20 years.
Exercise do helps asthma patients to a great extend as it increases the capacity of lung to a great extend.

Dear Sir,

I take a lot of oranges and drink fresh lemon whenever possible.

It is requested to give an affirmative suggestion whether citric is good to use or to be avoided?

Thank You all

Dear Assaram,

We get confused by this sayings.  I am an aasthmatic attacked patient.  Certain people says that citrus fruit juices can be had by adding hot water in it.  It will not  affect the wheezing problem or harm to the patient at any cost.    Also to add some honey or karupatti instead of sugar.  Doctors advice not to take jaggery.   But I am little bit confused whether to take it or not.  It is not the age to experiment with the body whether it accepts or not.  please guide me properly that whether I can take citrus fruits or not.  There should be a guarantee that it will not aggrevate the problem further because once if admitted to hospital an amount to the tune of 50000/- gone if it got attacked.

replyhighly appeciable.

Dear Ramachandran,
It is best avoided. In fact for Asthma patients, Acidity and kapha formation are the biggest threats which lead to Asthma attacks. In fact it would be better to avoid all citrous fruits such as oranges, Mosambi, lemon etc as all these would trigger Asthma. However during peak summer you can have these.
