Our new enlightened youth
While we oldies have messed up the world with economics, exhorting that the entire world is a web of mechanized feelingless, empathyless, inanimate economic interactions, the youth who now find that they do not have clean air, water, land, love, empathy are taking their own path---the empathy filled ecological road. The small write up in the Hindu, yesterday, 29th, December 2016, has created very pleasant feeling within me.
The KG Reddy College of Engineering and Technology, Moinabad, Hyderabad appears to have turned a new leaf for sanity, by taking up the cause of ecology. The social media have been abuzz with the spectacles of terrible cruelty meted out to animals, all focussed by the youngsters. They just are no longer willing to follow the career path standardized for them as the established drill.
Now this Engineering College has started a shelter for animals within the campus. In the college campus itself now dogs, cats, pigeons, turkeys, ducks and rabbits, find safety, shelter, appreciation...
They are no longer the raw materials, conveniently assumed as feeling less nothings not different from the inanimate minerals etc.But actually part of our own real world of consciousness---feelings, empathy, sublimation, arts...
The college, whether the management is aware or not, it is creating the beginnings of a butterfly effect in favour of ecology. This is the time when engineering has to be freed from mechanics and governed by ecology and empathy. As it is every engineer during the course of his career is cutting thousands of trees, damaging the environment, robbing the animals, birds, insects...of their natural habitats causing their extinction. Thousands of species today are threatened with extinction.
When cruelty is perpetrated against animals, it won't be very long when the same cruelty is extended to human beings also. It is happening now. The employees or the fellow humans have just become the costs to be tampered with and manipulated. The very idea of fellowship, team work, synergy, is being jettisoned in favour of automation, the road to the jobless or lifeless growth.
"The thought was that the students can bring in a change in the society and be ambassadors in spreading the message to their family and friends about loving animals and being sensitive towards them", said K.Krishna Reddy chairman of the institute. Based on the motto of 'feel good and do good', we want all our students to be involved in the activity of engaging with the animals brought to the shelter."
The great educationist he is, he is pioneering the change of engineering from its emphasis on the feeling less mechanics, to the emotional paradigm of ecology. The well being of the animals is the responsibility of the students. According to Mohd Zabi khan, a student of the college and an active volunteer, the students take turns to feed and also vaccinate the animals. The students are encouraged to bring abandoned animals to the shelter. Once the animal is healthy and old enough as per the certification of the vet, they are put up for adoption and handed over to a suitable owner. Some dogs have behavioural issues so they are kept for longer duration for rehabilitation.
Empathy can increase only when it is made part of religion and worship. In fact animal care and worship to God need to be made one. The very idea of decoration has to be changed. The decoration must be in the shape of empathy, love, appreciation, respect and acceptance of the animals, not in decking the hapless animals say elephants etc with jewellery etc.In our temples terrible cruelty is perpetrated on elephants. About the sacrifice of animals, the less said the better for our sanity.
