Get ready for a soul food odyssey! TIMES NEWS NETWORK It is food for the gods with recipes perfected over centuries. Join Times Passion Trails on a journey to savour prasad and grasp the philosophy behind it Faith, miracles and architectural splendour draw people to temples, but prasad or blessed food is equally a part of holy traditions. India has hundreds of famous places of worship, each one with its own distinctive prasad, from sweets to elaborate meals. Noted food writer Pushpesh Pant says, "What is cooked and served to the deities in various temples comprises some of the most resplendent recipes in the Indian culinary repertoire." He says an offering to God does not become prasad until it is accepted. "Temple foods when offered to the gods are called naivedya, and when they are accepted by the deity, they become prasad--blessed food." The third season of Times Passion Trails begins in the last week of August with a unique temple food trail specially curated by Pant for spiritually-inclined foodies. Consider it a pilgrimage that also celebrates taste.   Armed with his passion for good food and encyclopaedic knowledge of the subject, Pant will take travellers on a four-day odyssey starting at Delhi's Jagannath Temple "which preserves in the capital the tradition of the celebrated Mahaprasad at the great shrine at Puri."   Pant says temple kitchens place a high premium on purity and quality, and their food is considered ambrosial. "This short journey will strive to share with fellow travellers the ecstasy of partaking of prasad in some of the most renowned destinations in the context of temple foods."   From Delhi, the participants will head for Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura where the Makhan Mishri Bhog--favourite of young Shri Krishna--can be savoured. Dinner will be at Vrindavan's Iskcon temple where the delightful evolution of prasad through the millennia is evident. Food remains satvik (free from ingredients that give rise to dark and ignoble thoughts or arouse the baser animal instincts) yet does not compromise on taste.   It will be a selection of sweet and savoury delicacies curated by Pant to showcase the range of recipes served at the Krishna temple in Brajbhoomi in different seasons.   The next day on the cal endar is marked for Shri Govind Devji Temple in Jaipur. "A wide range of mouth-watering dishes will be served to the participants to allow them to appreciate how the regional palate has impacted the preparation of temple foods in different parts of the country," says Pant. The lunch and dinner menus are different, and based on Ayurveda that recommends eating food appropriate to the time of day--a prescription that even the gods follow.   The next stop will be Nathdwara, another Krishna temple famous for its lavish spread. "The delicacies here are very different from those in Mathura, Vrindavan and Jaipur. Lunch will be prasad from Shrinathji Temple. After darshan and aarti, the group will proceed to Udaipur.   The trail will conclude with a gala dinner planned to treat the pilgrim-gourmet to the best of temple foods, including some from temples that are not part of this itinerary.
