DEPRESSION

All depressed patients must be enquired specifically about suicidal ideations. Suicidal idea is a medical emergency. World over 1 million people commit suicide every year. 79% of patients who commit suicide contact their primary care provider in the last one year before their death and all most all in the last month before suicide. There are 20 non–fatal suicide attempts for every one completed suicide. Patients with prior history of attempted suicide are 5–6 times more likely to make another attempt.

Millions of people suffer from chronic depression. you or a loved one may have chronic depression. All chronic and long illnesses from heart disease to pain perception, sex, and sleep can complicate your life and produce untreated depression. Untreated depression may lead to serious and life threatening problems.

Types of Depression

Major depressive disorder is characterized by a combination of symptoms that interfere with a person's ability to work, Sleep Disorders, study, eat, and enjoy once-pleasurable activities. They last longer and is disabling. It can prevent you from functioning normally, and  all time have depressed mood or loss of interest.

Chronic depression, is characterized by a long-term (two years or more) depressed mood. Chronic depression is less severe than major depression and typically does not disable the person.

Bipolar disorder is a complex mood disorder that alternates between periods of clinical depression and times of extreme excitation. Overeating, Oversleeping, Fatigue, Extreme sensitivity to rejection, Moods that worsen or improve in direct response to events. sadness and a pattern of loss of appetite and difficulty fall or staying asleep are also called atypical depression.

Almost twice as many women as men have major or clinical depression during hormonal changes during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, miscarriage, and menopause, women have biologically vulnerable to increased stress at home or at work, balancing family life with career, caring for an aging parent and raising a child will also increase the risk of depression.

Bipolar disorder is a serious condition, can cause mania, sleeplessness, sometimes for days, along with hallucinations, psychosis, delusions, or paranoid rage. Their depressive episodes can be more devastating and harder to treat 
The mood episodes associated with Bipolar disorder involve clinical depression or mania (extreme elation and high energy) with periods of normal mood and energy in between episodes. They may have disturbances in thinking. They may also have distortions of perception and impairment in social functioning.

Causes of Depression

Depression is an extremely complex disease. It occurs for a variety of reasons. People experience depression during medical illness. There are a number of factors that may increase the chance of depression, Abuse. - Conflict. - Sadness or grief – Genetics - Serious illness.  - Major events. Even good events such as starting a new job, graduating, or getting married can lead to depression. So can moving, losing a job or income, getting divorced, or retiring.

Children, siblings, and parents of people with severe depression are somewhat more likely to suffer from depression. Multiple genes interacting with one another in special ways probably contribute to the various types of depression that run in families.

A chronic illness causes depression. Not only does chronic pain hurt, it also disturbs your sleep, your ability to exercise and be active, your relationships, and your productivity at work. Can you see how chronic pain may also leave you feeling sad, isolated, and depressed?

Grief is a common response to loss. Losses that may lead to grief include the death or separation of a loved one, loss of a job, death or loss of a beloved pet, or any number of other changes in life, such as divorce, becoming an "empty nester," or retirement. few experience depression

Depression in Men

Signs of depression in men include irritability, anger, or drug and alcohol abuse. Repressing their feelings can result in violent behavior. It can also result in an increase in illness, suicide, and homicide. Men who suffer from clinical depression are less likely to seek help or even talk about their experience.


men tend to express symptoms differently. Common symptoms of depression include loss of interest in usually pleasurable activities, fatigue, changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, and apathy. Depression in men may cause them to keep their feelings hidden. Instead of expressing a depressed mood, they may seem more irritable, hostile and aggressive.

Aging and senior men may have many medical conditions such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, or other stressors that may contribute to depression. There is the loss of income and meaningful work. Retirement is difficult for many men because they end up with no routine or set schedule. These changes may increase the stress, a loss of self-esteem and may have depression. In addition, the death of family and friends, the onset of other health problems, and some medications – drugs itself - can contribute to depression in men.

Depression in Women

Depression in women is very common. In fact, women are twice as likely to develop clinical depression as men.

In women, depression may be more likely to cause feelings of sadness and worthlessness. Main symptoms of depression in women are Persistent sadness, anxious, or "empty" mood, Loss of interest or pleasure in activities, Restlessness, irritability, or excessive crying, Sleeping too much or too little, Thoughts of death or suicide, Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain

Increased chance of depression in women may be related to changes in hormone levels that occur throughout a woman's life - puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, as well as after giving birth or experiencing a miscarriage. In addition, the hormone fluctuations that occur with each month's menstrual cycle probably contribute to premenstrual syndrome; -- a severe syndrome marked especially by depression, anxiety, and interferes with normal functioning of daily life.
