[World Malayali Club] Re: Business and black money

"In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." Benjamin Franklin
In India there is a third factor which cannot be avoided in life and that is bribes/corruption.
Way back in 1973 my younger brother was hit by a bus and died on the spot. He was taken to the hospital for post-mortem and other procedures. In those days such procedures could be carried out only in a govt hospitals. We had to pay bribes when the cadaver was carried from the ambulance to the mortuary, from mortuary to the operation table for post mortem and then back. A high bribe had to be paid for stitching up the cadaver properly after the post-mortem. Death and taxes are unavoidable in life. But bribery is unavoidable in India even before birth when the pregnant mother goes to the hospital for checkup and treatment and after death as in the case of my brother narrated above. And in between birth and death we have to pay bribes directly or indirectly (through consultants and the like) for education, for getting a driving license, for marriage license, for buying and/or selling land, for building a home. Then there are bribery components in every single item we buy.
It is ordinary people like us who take such bribes which goes to make our black money. In fact black money generated by ordinary people may be greater than the black money in the organized sector. But the black money from bribes generated in the unorganized sector is not as visible as the black money generated in the organized sector from evasion of taxes and other things.
So there is no point in pointing fingers at others. The change has to start with us if Modi and his efforts are to succeed. Remember every country is as corrupt as its people.

In India from times immemorial bribery  was prevalent even when we were ruled by kings and nawabs. If bribery was not there how kingdoms vanished. The information used to be leaked at a cost. In the same way britishers bribed several staff of the kings to get the information and ruled our country. So the bribery and corruption are inter related and those who are in the field will think of ways. There is a saying that every law has a flaw.
Let us wait and see how things will turn in our country. We will be happy if Modi rule will work out.
