Meal times are often clubbed with screen times by parents or caretakers for their convenience. While it makes meal times less stressful, especially if you have a picky eater, this can lead to overeating and obesity later because the child is gulping whatever is offered to him while he is engrossed watching TV or tab. "Imagine switching on the TV during study time so that your child may study well. Would you ever do that? Similarly your kid needs to focus during meal times so that she learns to enjoy it, look forward to it and not go on eating endlessly while engrossed in the TV," says Dr Dalwai. For screenfree meal times, Dr Bhat suggests that you must use the opportunity for sharing about your day as it helps in healthy conversation building and will still keep them engrossed.

9 BE A ROLE MODEL

Children are your best fol lowers. "Just like you can't ask a child to keep away from sugar while you are merrily chomping on a bar of chocolate, set the right example for screen too. If they see you addicted to screens then they will follow in your footsteps," says Vats.

10 SET LIMITS

However ideal it may sound, we cannot com pletely avoid screen. In that case, it's time to negotiate."Make only those rules which are practical for you and your child to definitely follow. Don't try to be too idealistic; you may end up frustrated. Let the child access the media for an hour or so and be strict about the timings. Get everyone in the family on the same page. Put in penalty clauses in the form of withdrawal of benefits never use harsh words or be abusive," says Bhat.

11 CHOOSE THE CONTENT

For older kids, be selec tive of the content that our child is exposed to during screen time. "If it is just reactive content, then it is extremely damaging to the development of logic, creativity, and problem solving abilities. Choose content that helps kids think and participate as a human and not as a robot. Also the content should not teach kids to be violent," suggests Vats.

12 SELF-AWARENESS

A happy mom is a good mom. "Life needs organisation in the form of intellect and discipline that comes from the brain not from the heart. Parenting can be distressing, and parents need to de-stress periodically. Stop feeling guilty about this. Go for it the way you think is best for you and your loved ones. Only if you are happy can you ever make anyone else happy," says Dr Dalwai.

"There is no magic wand that you can wave or fairy godmother you can invoke to keep your kids away from screens.You are the fairy godmother and your resolve to give your child a healthy life is your magic wand," says Vats.

SLEEPING WITH THE SCREEN

Excessive visual stimulation especially before bed times can lead to sleep difficulty as it interferes with release of melatonin which is responsible for regular sleep cycle."High arousal can lead to state of agitation and exhaustion which in long run affects academic performance as well as impacts social skill development," says Dr Bhat.

THE GAME OF GAMING

This is addiction, says Dr Dalwai.The American Academy of Paediatrics and the Canadian Society of Paediatrics states infants till the age of two years should not have any exposure to technology, 3-5 years be restricted to one hour per day, and 6-18 years restricted to two hours per day.
