Poachers are fundamentally altering the African elephant's gene pool.

New reports show that poaching has caused an increasing number of African elephants to be born without tusks.
Because poachers have been killing off elephants with tusks, there are now less of those animals in the wild and able to breed. The tuskless elephants that are left to breed are then more likely to pass that trait on to their offspring.
Now, researchers from the nonprofit Elephant Voices report that up to 98 percent of female elephants in some areas of Africa are lacking ivory tusks, an astronomical figure compared to recent past averages of between two and six percent.
Joyce Poole, the head of Elephant Voices, has been tracking changes in African elephants for almost 40 years. According to Poole, there is a direct correlation between poaching and the percentage of tuskless calves being born.
Because more tuskless elephants survive as poachers take out the elephants with tusks, a population "ends up with a higher proportion of tuskless animals who then reproduce and tend to produce tuskless offspring," Poole said to Nautilus. "In this day and age, with all the poaching going on, tuskless elephants are at an advantage because they are not being targeted for their tusks."
And if the situation doesn't get better soon, the species may end up virtually tuskless, much like their Asian cousins.
This kind of species-wide change has another devastating precedent as well. In Mozambique — where the violence surrounding a civil war contributed to the slaughter of 90 percent of the area's elephants between 1977 to 1992 — 30 percent of the female elephants born there still do not have tusks. Older female elephants — spared because they had no tusks — then passed the tuskless gene down to their daughters.
This story also brings to mind the sad tale of Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa, where 98 percent of female elephants don't have tusks. By the time the South African government established the park in 1931, vacationing Western hunters had killed all but 11 elephants, with four of the eight females who were spared being tuskless and thus more likely to produce tuskless offspring.
Beyond this alarming new trend, poaching has, moreover, driven Africa's elephants to the brink of extinction in certain areas, with poachers murdering almost 56 elephants each day between 2007 and 2014. Those 144,000 slaughtered elephants — close to a third of all Africa's elephants — died largely to help meet ivory demand in China, where it is highly sought after and part of a sadly booming trade.

[World Malayali Club] Healthy Options: Diabetes- Scientific Recognition and Natural Protection

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent new epidemics in the world, and one of the fastest growing diseases. One of the main reasons for this is the unhealthy lifestyle and habits that are forming by modern living.
It is of immense importance that everyone is aware of the signs of type II diabetes, because the best way to avoid the disease is to make an early detection and engage in actions that will prevent the diabetes from developing.
The general term for these signs is 'pre-diabetes'. The blood sugar levels are not yet on a full blown diabetes level, and can still be reversed.
So first, know the symptoms:
* Feeling thirsty even after drinking a lot
* Feeling weak even after resting for a sufficient amount of hours.
* Urinating more frequently, especially at night.
* Gaining weight despite no change in diet and even with
exercising.
* Feeling hungry again minutes after eating.
* Skin infections take a very long time to heal.
* Blurred night vision.

Tests that help in early detection:
If you recognize in yourself two or more of these symptoms, then it is crucial that you have yourself tested to see if you are indeed on the path to diabetes. There are basically 2 tests you can take:
1. Fasting Plasma Glucose Test:
This test requires you to fast for about 8-10 hours. It would be best to give your blood sample in the early morning before breakfast. This test checks your how well your body maintains glucose levels and interacts with it. If your results show that your blood glucose levels are between 100-125 ml/dl, then you are either pre-diabetic or already suffering from early diabetes. If they blood sugar levels are less than 100 ml/dl, then you are safe from the disease.

2. Oral Glucose Test
Two hours after your breakfast or lunch, the lab technician will take a blood sample. If the test results show your blood sugar level between 140-199 ml/dl, then you are pre-diabetic. If it is less than 140 - you are free from it.
Don't panic if your test results reveal that you are a pre-diabetic, there are still ways to reverse the process.
How to Reverse the Symptoms of Diabetes:
Many will suggest you start taking medication to solve your pre-diabetes problem. While these medications will lower your blood-sugar levels, they are not a long-term solution. A long-term reversal of the symptoms requires:
1. Daily exercise:
If you have pre-diabetic symptoms, it's crucial that you start exercising every day. This will help your muscles to become less dependant on insulin, and will help maintain your blood sugar level. Put aside 30-45 minutes a day for exercise.
2. Watch you carb consumption.
To reverse the symptoms, cut down on your simple carbs, as the body will break them down to fats and energy that will be converted to fat. You need complex carbs like multi-grain bread, wheat bread, brown pasta, brown rice, and boiled potatos. Exclude white bread, candy, chocolate, pasta, rice, cookies and cakes from your daily consumption.
3. Drink LOTS of water.
I can't stress this enough - stay hydrated. You need to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day to wash the toxins from your body through urination.
4. Change to a high fiber diet
Fiber doesn't only bring down your blood sugar levels but will also help you lose weight. A high fiber diet with plenty of water will make you feel full without raising your blood sugar levels. Legumes, raw fruit and vegetables have a high amount of fiber in them.
5. Don't Let Stress Get to You.
This may be the hardest one. You must avoid high stress levels if you wish to reverse your diabetes symptoms. Practice yoga, try meditating and get plenty of sleep.

These are the natural ways to fight early diabetes, and have no side effects. So make sure you stick to a healthy diet, daily exercise and watch what you eat to keep diabetes away.

[World Malayali Club] Future Forward: Making India Better- The Rupay Card for You and Me

This is the time where Indians are shifting from cash transaction to electronic transaction. Whenever we use a debit card or credit card, do you know that there is a transaction fee associated with it

? In most cases you may not be charged but the merchant will be charged. Let us understand what this is for. First of all, no banks or any entities provide any sought of financial networks. It's all provided by international companies namely VISA, MasterCard, American Express etc. For example, when you get an ATM card with VISA label on that from the issuing bank, the bank provides you the facility to use the visa network. For that the bank has to pay a nominal fee to VISA for every transaction. The bank will get this back from the merchant. So each transaction makes these foreign companies rich.

Now let us see about the RuPay technology introduced by NPCI (National Payment Corporation of India) under the guidelines of RBI (Reserve Bank of India). RuPay is a similar network as VISA, MasterCard etc. This is managed by Reserve Bank of India. All most all public sector and private banks have started to give RuPay based cards to their customers. RuPay cards got a major boost through the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana as RuPay cards were issued to all Jan Dhan accounts.

The advantages are lot.
The main advantage is the transaction charges. Charges are very minimal. While Visa / MasterCard / Amex cards creates a transaction fee of about 1.9% of the total amount, RuPay will charge only 0.01%. Secondly, these charges in turn go to the Reserve Bank Itself. Third and the most important - All the transactional data lies in the Indian Servers. The good news is that NPCI is trying to make it international, which means foreign banks will start using RuPay cards. You can get more information about RuPay from
Next time when you apply or renew a card, opt for RuPay card. Let's make India better.
Please forward this information to all your friends.
